A stepper motor operates with a current of 400mA to 1.2A at a voltage of 12V. A classic DC motor, on the other hand, works with voltages from 3V to 24V and a current of 600mA to 4A. Normally an SBC operates with voltages of 3.3V or 5.0V and a very weak current of about 30 mA.

A Single Board Computer (SBC) like the Raspberyy Pi does not have the power to supply DC motors or stepper motors with sufficient energy. The logic of the Raspberry Pi computer cannot handle this task directly and therefore a motor driver is required.

L298 is a high power version of the L293d motor driver IC.

During lower voltage, an additional power supply is provided for the logic to work properly. The lower transistor’s emitters of each bridge are connected and the corresponding external terminal can be used for external sensing resistor connection. It is a high voltage, a high current dual full-bridge driver designed to accept standard TTL logic levels and drive inductive loads such as relays, solenoids, DC, and stepping motors. The L298 is a monolithic integrated circuit in a 15-lead Multi watt and PowerSO20 packages. There are two enable inputs, which enables or disables the device independently of the input signals. this module controls two Dc motors at the same time in any direction and speed. It accepts standard TTL logic level inductive loads like solenoids, relays DC motors, etc. L298N Motor driver module is a high voltage, high current, and dual full-bridge driver.
